A recent Microsoft survey revealed that 54% of Gen Zers, and 41% of all employees globally, are considering resigning. If you’re one of the many people considering leaving a job, but worry that doing so might damage your relationships, potential references, or the goodwill you’ve built up, you aren’t alone. Maybe you’ve rethought your career goals altogether, and they don’t include commuting to an office five days a week. Or it’s made you hunger for a deeper sense of purpose in your work. Perhaps this past year has shown you a dark side of your organization or boss. While we all have moments that bring us to the brink of our limits, we rarely have the luxury of up and quitting in a huff like people do in the movies, no matter how satisfying we think it would feel. The 1996 iconic pop-culture film Jerry Maguire features a scene in which Dorothy Boyd, played by Renee Zellweger, stands up at her desk, fed up with the backstabbing politics of her company, packs up her things and declares, “I just want to be inspired!” If you’ve thought the decision through and believe it’s right for you, then stick by it.
